ALL THE YOUNG LOONS (J8x32) 3C (4C set)
Recommended music: A lively, incisive jig such as
Glayva recorded by Iain MacPhail and his Scottish Dance Band
1- 8 1C set, cast off one place (2s step up), set advancing, & turn 2H to face 1st corners (man may raise RH, retaining BH briefly & twirl woman under)
9-16 1C dance Hello Goodbye setting; on last 2 bars turn R about with pdb
17-24 1C cross RH up/down, cast R to 2nd place own sides, dance half turn & twirl to opposite sides to face 1st corners
25-32 RSh reels of 3 (RSh to 1st corner); on bar 3 1C turn LH to swap reels; continue reeling by giving LSh to partner's 1st corner; on bar 7 1C join RH with LHs raised palm to palm, 1M turning 1W under to 2nd place own sides (or they may stay in the middle ready to set).
After the second time through, old 1C set and cast as new 1C do the same.
All twirls are optional but highly recommended.
I was recently delighted to learn (courtesy of The Buckie Loon) that 'loon' means 'lad', at least if you come from near Aberdeen. This dance is inscribed to all the young loons who have recently been gracing the dance floors of Seattle, bringing with them a splendid mix of verve, gallantry and - let's face it - lunacy.
(I leave it to others to pay suitable tribute to the lasses.)
